Newsletter October 2015

Despite the rain the action "Straat(m)ijsje) was a great happening. Thanks to the collaboration and sponsorship of many we could give Frank van Rijn a cheque for € 7500, -. You can read more about this action on our website.

Besides Amigos Colombianos we assisted a number of projects financially:
* Abrazos Foundation works in Cuso (Peru) and gives children with autism a chance. This foundation focuses not only on children but also on their environment.
* Manda Foundation wants to start a small horticultural business in the region of Mwangwei in Kenya.
* Jos Schoenmaker tackles poverty in one of the slums in Sao Paulo working with "Nova Estrela" a neighborhood association there.

By the end of 2015 the Millennium goals which were drawn up by 189 government leaders in 2000 must be achieved. Our foundation uses its Millennium Development Goals as the basis for its actions. But what about those goals? Are all the goals achieved?
In this and the next circulars I will try to give an answer.

Before: It is often said: "Knowledge is power." It is difficult to determine whether or not a goal has been achieved, if not almost impossible. It is not easy to measure the level of prosperity of billions of people, "All over the World". For each country, the starting point is already not the same. And sometimes a developing country does not even know how many people are living in that country. How can you collect the necessary data?

Millennium goal 1
In 2015, the proportion of people living on less than $ 1.00 per day must be reduced by half. The number of people who suffer from hunger must be reduced by half.
The first part of this goal has been achieved: in 1990 47 percent of the world population lived in extreme poverty, now it is 22 percent.
The second part is achieved in part: In 1990, 23.2 percent lived with hunger, which is now 14.9 percent.
You could say that the first goal has been achieved. Yet there is still plenty of work to do because now 1 out of 8 people live in extreme poverty, one third of whom live in countries south of the Sahara.
